The Early Years at 4BC

Many, many years ago there was a Brisbane man who followed the early overseas developments of the wonders of wireless with keen interest.

JB Chandler was officially licensed to build and operate a broadcast station 4BC, which began operation in 1930.

A Day Of Programming

4BC programming has always been interesting and inventive. Below is an example of 4BC programming in the early years. The program in question took place on Saturday, July 1, 1933.
 
4BC's Dramatic Team produced up to 12 live features a week - including 'Witches Tales' which was sold throughout Australia and to America. The man in charge of this activity was Tom McGregor

Changing Owners & Location

In the late 1930s 4BC went through some big changes with a new home and a new owner.

New Owners and a New Location
In 1937, 4BC was purchased by the Australian Broadcasting Company. The Commonwealth Broadcasting Corporation (Q'land) Pty Ltd was incorporated on April 2, 1937 to administer the licence.

From 1950's To 1980

4BC experiences more firsts and momentous occasions.

In 1951, 4BC celebrated its 21st year of broadcasting and to commemorate the occasion, the transmission schedule was increased to 24 hours. The new service was officially opened on October 15, 1951, by Mr Vince Gair, the acting Premier of Queensland.

The Golden Years

The ‘80s saw 4BC maturing in leaps and bounds, successfully allowing the station to stay at the top of its game.

Live descriptions of Rugby League Football were introduced on 4BC in February 1980 when 4BC was awarded exclusive broadcasting rights of this popular code of football.

The Time Of Southern Cross

The ‘90s and new millenium saw some dramatic changes for 4BC, including the entrance of Southern Cross Broadcasting.

1991 paved the way for even more stirring developments. The contract with the TAB came to an end and we gained a new station manager, John Musgrove.
