Classic International Cruises will enjoy its biggest-ever season in Australia next summer, with two liners offering 23 cruises to and from Fremantle and, for the first time, Sydney and Adelaide.
Next summer’s season from November 2008 to May 2009 will see the debut in Australia of the classic liner, Princess Daphne, which will offer a short season of value-for-money cruises from Sydney. During her maiden program here, the stylish Princess Daphne will grace Brisbane three times - December 17, 2008, and March 7 and 11, 2009 – allowing locals to witness the return of traditional cruising to our shores.
Princess Daphne will join popular fleet mate, Funchal, which will operate the first-ever round-trip cruises from Adelaide and then return to Fremantle for her fifth consecutive season in Western Australia.
The expanded program will see Classic International Cruises double its capacity in Australia to a record 10,000 passengers next summer.
A selection of cruises from three to 49 nights duration are available, including round cruises to the South Pacific islands, Asia and Tasmania, the first cruises to Kangaroo Island and four traditional line voyages between Australia and Europe and the UK. Fares start at just A$645 per person, inside twin-share for a three-night sojourn at sea.
In contrast to the rapid growth of ever-expanding resort-type superliners, with their climbing walls, skating rinks and long queues, Classic International Cruises offers a return to what it calls the ‘Classic Cruising Experience’ where crew escort passengers to their cabins on embarkation and know their names throughout the cruise in an intimate, friendly and relaxed setting.
In fact, attentive, old-fashioned service from the Australian and international crew and first-class cuisine are the hallmarks of the Classic Cruising experience. It’s cruising as it was meant to be, with a sense of the ocean and all its mystery, adventure and nautical traditions.
The line’s elegant, yacht-like ships, Princess Daphne and Funchal, both registered in Portugal, are stylishly traditional and solidly-built liners purpose-built for blue-water ocean cruising.
They are smaller than most cruise ships today, carrying no more than 590 discerning guests, but therein lays their appeal. The sister ships are easy to get around and they boast a special warmth and charming ambience – an authentic home-away-from-home with a rewarding camaraderie that only smaller vessels can provide.
The fully refurbished Princess Daphne, originally built in 1955, offers four well-appointed lounges and bars, a pool and jacuzzi, spacious open decks, a gym, sauna and spa centre, outdoor buffet, nightclub, boutique and a light-filled, fine-dining restaurant where you can enjoy full English breakfasts, four course lunches, traditional afternoon teas and sumptuous five-course dinners.
Carrying 590 passengers, the 16,000-ton ship has 238 comfortable and spacious cabins spanning across the ship’s eight decks. All cabins offer private bathrooms – most with a bathtub - and 90 per cent boast ocean views. There are also a range of suites, including six indulgent balcony suites.
And a bonus for single travellers is that instead of paying for two passengers, a small surcharge is all that’s required for sole use of a cabin on many of the line’s longer voyages.
