Profile: Tony Leonard

3AW Football
Saturday 10am - midday

Tony came into radio via community station 3RRR with the Coodabeen Champions, a one hour talk program that took a light-hearted look at Australian Rules from the point of view of the spectator.

The program commenced in 1981 and Tony joined in 1982 when the code was known as the VFA. He stayed with the program (and the station changes, 3LO/3AW) until 2002.

In 1996, Tony commenced calling the AFL (with David Hookes) and now is the co-match day caller on Sundays with Rex Hunt.

Tony also fills-in for the Breakfast team and reviews pubs for Neil Mitchell on Fridays.

What was your first job?
I commenced work in the EDP Branch of the Premiers Department in 1973, with a range of testing duties such as filing, letter delivering and general dogs-bodying. Pay was $45 for the fortnight.
What is your favourite on air moment thus far?
It happens every Friday around 11:40am with Neil.  I get paid for going to a pub and then talking about it. I still can’t believe that!
What is your most embarrassing on air moment?
Giving James Hird a vote in the replay of the Saints/Bombers game at Waverley after the lights went out. He only played 28 minutes of the game and the father of a Saints player called me for everything on air.
If you could interview anyone (living or dead) who would it be?
Benny Hill. I don’t care whether he is/was politically incorrect, I want to tell he was a rare commodity in comedy; he was funny.
