Profile: Steve Murphy

Various

Steve has been a journalist, commentator, senior political adviser and corporate communications consultant for almost 30 years.

What was your first job?
Working in a produce and seed merchant business in regional Queensland hauling 50 kilo bags of wheat, potatoes, pumpkins and onions on and off the back of a delivery truck. Back-breaking work that made a journalist’s job of asking questions look very, very attractive.
What is your favourite on air moment thus far?
Accurately calling the result of the 2002 State Election 48 minutes after the polls closed and any time I’m on 3AW.
What is your most embarrassing on air moment?
I recently had a mental blank and couldn’t think of the word ‘nursery’ as a place where you buy plants. Unfortunately I was doing the Big Back Yard when this brain snap occurred. D'oh!
If you could interview anyone (living or dead) who would it be?
Former U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfield, so I could ask him what on earth he was thinking when he said there are “known knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns.”
