Neil's grocery price watch

Price Watch: Selby-Lynn Bradford

When Kevin Rudd announced earlier this year that he would monitor the price of groceries – Neil Mitchell thought he would do the same. Each month he sends program reporter Selby-Lynn Bradford out to buy a basket of goods. In February, the cost of the identical items had increased at both Coles and Safeway. The survey only looks at non-discounted prices in order to get a better idea of the overall trends. This month bananas were $1.20 to $1.50 per kilo more expensive than last month. There was also a cost blow out in the price of tomatoes – they increased by $2.50 per kilo at Coles and $3.10 per kilo at Safeway. The survey also confirms that the price of dairy products is on the increase with milk going up 10 cents on average and cheese going up by 20 cents. The biggest drop in price was the cost of beef mince at Safeway – it dropped by $2.00 a kilo. The program will continue to monitor the trends all year.
