In the Spotlight

2UE Apology

On 3 November 2004 during his then morning program, John Laws commented on American celebrity Carson Kressley’s role in judging Fashions on the Field at the 2004 Melbourne Cup. With the intention of engaging in a light-hearted discussion, Mr Laws queried whether an American homosexual man was the best judge of Australian ladies and their fashion. In doing so, John Laws made several comments about homosexuality.

The NSW Anti Discrimination Act sets limits on what can be said in public. The purpose of the Act is to stop the vilification of certain groups in the community. The aim of the Act is to promote tolerance, understanding and acceptance in the community.

The NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal found that Mr Laws’ comments were capable of inciting severe ridicule of homosexual men.

2UE apologises for any hurt these comments may have caused to homosexual men.
