Not sure what podcasts are or how to subscribe to one? It’s easy. Just follow the simple Fairfax Radio Network podcast guide below.
What is a podcast?
Podcasting is an exciting new technology that allows Fairfax Radio Network to automatically send radio programming to your home computer or portable device. To do this, you must subscribe to the podcast by downloading a piece of software.
What podcast software can I use?
You will need to download a podcasting program to listen to your podcasts.
Podcast software is usually free and available from most popular download sites. All programs will allow you to listen to your Fairfax Radio Network podcasts on your mp3 player, mobile phone and Pocket PC, as well as computers running Mac OS or Linux.
There are three podcast programs which are preferred by Fairfax Radio Network users. Click the links below to be taken to the appropriate download site.
iTunes
Juice
Doppler
These programs manage all of your podcast subscriptions when connected to the internet. The software searches for the latest episode of the program on the Fairfax Radio Network website and will download it to a folder on your computer. This means your podcast software will do the work for you, making for quick and easy access to your preferred Fairfax Radio Network podcasts.
How do I subscribe to a podcast?
Once the software is installed, you need to manually subscribe to your favourite podcasts. Once you have done this, the podcasts will download automatically when a new episode becomes available. This process will vary depending on the software you have chosen. Here is a rough guide to how you can do this:
If you have iTunes, Juice, Doppler or other podcast software
For most programs, you will need to add the “feed” of the podcast to your software. The feed is just the web address of the podcast which the software will go to each time it checks for a new episode. Find the 'subscribe to podcast' option (or similar) and copy & paste the relevant subscription URL into your podcasting program. This will add the selected episode to your podcasting subscriptions.
For iTunes, you will find the 'subscribe to podcast' option in the 'advanced' menu on the toolbar.
It is important that you make sure the scheduling function of your podcasting program is set to search for podcasts automatically. For iTunes, select 'Podcasts' in the left-hand navigation menu and click the 'settings' option in the bottom panel. Here you can specify how often you want the software to check for new episodes. This way the programs will be updated regularly for you and with little hassle.
