TWO WEEKS AGO: Thursday was a big day for disgraced footballer Ben Cousins – and he wasn’t even in the country.
The former West Coast Eagles skipper was reported as missing in Los Angeles early in the morning Australian time after not turning up for a scheduled check-in for a drug rehabilitation clinic in Malibu.
As the story (speculation?) developed, Cousins was then sighted by a 3AW Breakfast listener in Manhattan – the latter which came after a reported fling with Hollywood starlet Cameron Diaz.
Neil Mitchell then all but pronounced him dead at 8:35am, well, he mused that Cousins possibly could be dead or on the way due to a drug addiction. Mitchell’s editorial saw a flood of emails from disgruntled Western Australians (see a selection of the emails below), which only prompted the 3AW host to have another crack on Friday.
Over in the West, a different approach was taken, as Cousins’ mate and 6PR sports host Brad Hardie urged Mitchell to calm down. 6PR’s Howard Sattler then bit back at Mitchell before the father of the man with ‘Such Is Life’ emblazoned on his chest made an emotional plea for his son to be left alone.
Despite Brian Cousins’ statement, 3AW’s Sports Today hosts Dwayne Russell and Gerard Healy took a flood of calls from irate people wanting the story to go away.
Russell and Healy argued that a man with the blatant attention-seeking behaviour Cousins’ past is littered with gives the media more license to monitor his every move.
The real question is whether people really want this story to go away. Despite the talkback suggesting this is the case, the sheer volume of interest in the Brownlow Medalist’s fortunes would indicate there are a few sordid chapters left.
The AFL is certainly paying attention, having announced on Friday afternoon that Cousins will be charged with bringing the game into disrepute as a result of an outstanding charge against him by Perth police. Cousins will be able to represent himself at the hearing via video link-up on November 19.
What do you think of Ben Cousins? Is the media all to blame or does he bring the attention on himself? Whatever the answers to those questions are, Cousins' shabby behaviour the past couple of years can not be totally hidden behind what appears to be serious emotional problems.
