Why raise interest rates?
Perhaps some economic guru out there can tell me why it is that interest rates have to go up to tighten the money supply. Surely a more productive tool would be to apply a compulsory employee superannuation contribution rate that the Reserve Bank could determine as and when the need arises. At least that way, the employee gets to keep the money albeit having to wait until they are 55. Only one third of the population have a mortgage. Why do they have to bear the brunt? A compulsory employee super contribution rate would share the burden more effectively, as well as contribute to wealth. Interest rates increases hurt only those borrowing. It rewards those who invest. If we want to slow activity wouldn't it be better to introduce a tool that slows down everyone's activity?
Taxi drivers: Neither respected nor valued.
'How do we fix the taxi industry,' is a cry I constantly hear from radio talk-back hosts, and it seems Neil Mitchell and John Faine are leading the charge. I suspect the answer lies somewhere in between, 'you get what you pay for' and 'you get what you value.' It is not, I suggest, our taxi industry that is failing us, it is our community failing the taxi industry. When the community learns to RESPECT the industry as a vital and important part of our infrastructure, and VALUES the people who represent it on the front line, the industry will respond. The essential problem today is that the community does not RESPECT or VALUE the industry. IF IT DID....driving a taxi would be seen as a worthwhile occupation. It would be something people would aspire to do. It would be something people would be ATTRACTED to, as it is in say, in London for example. Here in Melbourne, it is a job of last resort....low pay, dreadful conditions, with drivers subject to abuse and assault, no holiday pay, no guaranteed income, no sick leave. Asking drivers to perform to the standards we expect, but in the process treating them in this way is a clear indication that we do not RESPECT them, or VALUE what they do. We value our police, nurses, teachers, firemen, and although they too, complain about their conditions, at least they are rewarded for their performance with a pay structure, holidays, and sick leave. Taxi drivers are called upon to be the front-line ambassadors to our city, and in return we guarantee them NOTHING! When someone rings a radio station to complain about an incident they have experienced, you can hear Mitchell and Faine licking their lips, ready to fire broadsides at an easy target. For all their hyperbole, they have done nothing to help. They have in fact done the reverse. If Melbourne wants a taxi service it is proud of, it must first learn to RESPECT and VALUE its components. It is no use to anyone to say.....'when they learn to do the job properly, we'll respect them.' The buck stops with the COMMUNITY. A fare increase this week will see a new round of complaints emerge and the same old rhetoric from talk-back radio hosts. Then it will all die down for a while, as some other issue grabs their attention, or until a new complaint arises. Let's stop complaining and do something positive. but first, we must RESPECT and VALUE the service, and DEMONSTRATE that in a productive way.
The Sadness of Howardism
Seeing John Howard on his 'sourgrapes', or should we call it, 'I'm right and they are wrong' tour of the US makes you wonder just how incredibly arrogant, and how desperate this man is to re-affirm his own manifesto to anyone who will listen. His audience on this occasion has been referred to as a 'conservative American think tank'. That description alone is an oxymoron, but given that his own party has jettisoned so much of what he stood for, highlights how much the entire nation of Australia was a prisoner to one man's over-powering domination for 11 years. Doubtless Howard will continue to roam the world accepting invitations from like-minded conservatives where he will graciously accept the applause from the converted. He might even be lulled into thinking that his views on IR, Kyoto, Reconciliation, Pacific solution and so on, will be proven to be right. In reality however, it is the case that the world and more importantly Australia has moved on, while he is stuck firm somewhere in the mire of the past. The sadness of Howardism is that the man himself cannot bear to think that it is all over.
Predictions for 2008
What do you think will happen during the course of 2008? Will Hilary Clinton become the new US President? Will the Beijing Olympics be a smash hit? Will Harry Potter meet up with Osama bin laden? Can John Howard find something to do? Will George Bush bomb the moon by mistake? Can religion survive Global warming? Let's hear your predictions. There will be prizes for the most creative prophesies.
Smell the roses....ode to a nightmare over.
I woke up this morning and realized I had been dreaming an eleven year nightmare. Waking up was like being let out of prison. Finally we have an exit solution to Iraq. Finally we have an end to the shameful 'Pacific Solution'. Finally the workplace will have harmony restored. No more blame game No more lies. (Well, maybe one or two). No more deceit No more.....no more....no more.... 12 months from now, George Bush will be gone. Hilary Clinton will be in the White House. It's the future, stupid! Ah Jeez, smell the roses. Aren't they great!
What goes around, comes around.
Back in 2004 John Howard was beside himself when he realized he had control in both houses. His long suffering dream of "killing off " the union movement once and for all looked a distinct possibility. His plan was first to put the 'worker' back in his place, as a serf to the employer. Thus Workchoices was born. The problem though was that JH didn't realize that the very people he was putting back in their place, were the same ones who voted for him. Talk about dumb and dumber! It's not the economy...it's Workchoices, stupid!
Humanist Manifesto Vs. The Religious Right
To all those Religious Right fanatics out there who seem to think they have a mission to influence the outcome of the election, please take note, that 30+% of Australians are Atheist, (Source: the latest Census) and we have a right to be heard as well. Therefore, perhaps posting an alternate view is appropriate: 'Ask every question and question every answer.' If one needs faith in order to believe in something, then the likelihood of that something having any truth or value, is seriously diminished. So before you start quoting some meaningless verse, do yourself a big favor and put that stupid, primitive, superstitious, piece of literary clap-trap called the bible, to one side and remember that you live in the 21st century. The people who wrote those "pearls of wisdom" knew NOTHING of what we know today. They were searching for answers that WE ALREADY HAVE! USE YOUR BRAIN, not your heart. Get out there and try to make a difference by DOING SOMETHING, not quoting useless verse that only aggravates people. Go and give a homeless person a decent meal. Then you won't have to waste time quoting crap. You will be living like a true human being. YOU DON'T NEED A GOD TO DO THAT!
THE GREAT URBAN MYTH....
There is a perception among the voters that the Coalition is the better economic manager. This is a bigger myth than the claim that we can see the Great Wall of China from the moon. The Labor government under both Bob Hawke's and Paul Keating's leadership introduced 5 major economic reforms that underpin what economic strengths we enjoy today. They were: 1. The float of the Australian dollar. 2. The de-regulation of the financial industry 3. The shift from a wage-fixing system to enterprise bargaining. 4. The introduction of compulsory superannuation. 5. Tarrif reform. These fundamental changes to our economic system were what set us on a course for prosperity. John Howard cowardly brushes over these basic foundations and tries to claim his and Peter Costello's management as the champion of reform. If Peter Costello were so good at his job, how come he lost $2 billion on the Futures market 6 years ago? Why is this not a matter for closer scrutiny?
Is John Howard fit to be Prime Minister?
If everything you know today about John Howard, you knew 11 years ago, would you consider that he was still fit to be Prime Minister? With all the dirt the government is trying to dig up about Kevin Rudd, perhaps asking about John Howard would be the more appropriate question. Consider Tampa, babies overboard, Ethanol, WMD's, his slavish support of George Bush, AWB, his agreement to hand over to Peter Costello, His 'I'll stay as long as the party wants me', his non-core promises, and so on. Is this not the more relevant question in the campaign?
Howard's doing it again!
Am I the only one who can see it? All media outlets are reporting that John Howard said he will retire sometime well into the next term if re-elected. NO, HE DIDN'T!!! What he said was, he would "FORM THE VIEW" that sometime well into the next election...yudda yudda . This is classic Howard double-speak. Saying one thing to create an impression of his intention without actually saying it. This gives him the opportunity to deny what people claim he said when the time actually comes. The media have been sucked in again. Remember when he was asked about retirement eight or nine years ago? He said he would wait until he was 64 and then consider his position. Everyone thought that meant he would retire at 64 or 65. BUT HE DIDN'T MEAN THAT! He knew exactly what he meant. John Hewson made the observation a few years back that deep down, Howard has it in his head to serve longer than Sir Robert Menzies, and my guess is that Hewson was right. As pathetic as it sounds, that milestone is important to Howard. I challenge any journalist to press Howard for a definitive time frame. I bet you don't get one!
